Notes From the Field: How a Server Rack Can Get Out of Control

March 12, 2008

Client calls and is having issues with a PC getting online. Delta Tech Guy goes through all our usual steps and nothing works. Tech figures it must be the router so he has a staff person walk him down to where their equipment is located.
Here is what he sees:
An example of how NOT to run wires on a server rack
This is a textbook example of how NOT to run wires on a server rack.
Oh, by the way, this is the FRONT.

Delta Tech Guy now begins to play the game: Where’s the Cisco router?

Turns out, the Cisco and DSL modem are hanging off the back/side of this monstrosity. They would have hit the floor, but the cable mess is just as bad in back as it is in front. Also, see that black panel to the right there? That is another rack jammed sideways so you can’t really get behind the rack unless you are a gymnast or have a pole vault handy.

Delta Tech Guy has to pull things up to the front by their cables, praying that things don’t disconnect in the process because he’ll never get that cable back in the right place. It turns out he didn’t have to worry much because they have zip ties about every inch. After what seemed like several hours of cutting cable ties Delta Tech Guy can finally arrange the Cisco router, DSL modem and 5 port switch. Now, he can actually do what he went into this room to do – reboot the router. Good times.

Does your computer network have you tied up in knots? Does your current network support company think its OK to have a squirrel’s nest in your server room?

Delta Publishes Volume 14, Issue 16 of the Columbia Business Times

March 8, 2008

The good people at the Business Times Company electronically delivered the latest issue of the CBT to Delta in PDF, printer ready format. Delta then publishes the PDF and dumps graphics and stories into WordPress to get the individual stories properly indexed by Google News and a myriad of search engines.  The official publication date is every other Saturday.  The online issue is set to automatically go live at 5:00pm on the Friday before the day of publication since print copies start arriving in mailboxes on Friday.

The Columbia Business Times can be found online at http://www.columbiabusinesstimes.com

Everything you see on that site is database driven – no human layout is required for each issue - it is automatically handled by the system and all stories in each issue are pushed live simultaneously and automatically.

Redesigned C&S Business Services Website Launches

March 3, 2008

C&S Business Services asked Delta Systems to bring their website design to life. C&S did all the graphics and then handed them off to Delta Systems so as to get the site cut up and put online. Delta was able to optimize the site for Google, made the site accessibility compliant (Section 508 and WAI), and is CSS and XHTML 1.0 Strict standard compliant. Why does that matter? Next-Design.com puts it this way, “Using standards-based industry best-practices on your site gives it maximum flexibility and maximum market penetration; your site will render correctly across browsers and platforms, as well as any additional media you want.” Read more about standards here.

Delta Gets Transparent and Green with Basecamp

March 1, 2008

Delta Systems has greatly increased client communication and project transparency by utilizing Basecamp.

Almost all Delta clients now enjoy the ability to know exactly what is going on with their projects: what is left to do, ability to easily share documents/screenshots/graphics or communicate with our staff – all of this without having to call Delta. If a client sees an update necessary on their website, wants a new feature for a tracking system, spots a bug in something, they can simply add a to-do item to a list and assign it to our staff. .

Delta Gets More Green

Internal paper consumption has dropped significantly now that we use Basecamp in our weekly all-staff meetings instead of printing off a dozen copies of a 15 page list of our 115 active projects. Instead of printing out notes before meetings, using Basecamp at meetings also allows us to instantly update task completion statuses, review/adjust milestones, assign tasks, or share technical information such as database locations, logins, usernames, and third party service account information.

We highly recommend this collaboration tool. Visit http://basecamphq.com/?referrer=Z9CAK4456W for more information
