Dong Xu, James C. Dowell Professor and Chair - Department of Computer Science

The University of Missouri Computer Science Department held their annual meeting of the Computer Science Industry Advisory Council on May 3, 2010. The event was hosted by department chair Dong Xu.

The Computer Science Industry Advisory Council (CS-IAC) provides suggestions and inputs to the department on many issues including curriculum, student development and job placement, research, and outreach. The University also work with the Council Members to strengthen the collaboration between their companies and the MU Computer Science department, in particular, to help match companies and students for internship and job opportunities, as well as to establish research collaborations.

Finally, the council is given the opportunity to share market trend and technology needs that will help MU Computer Science students obtain employment.  This, in turn, influences syllabus and course offerings at the University.

A CS-IAC meeting is held every year, typically a one-day event. During the meeting, the department will make a number of presentations about the undergraduate programs for the committee members to comment. This includes panel discussions and several Senior Capstone projects. Council members are also briefed on the activities and developments happening in the Computer Science and Computer Engineering Schools at the University.

During this year’s meeting, presentations were made by Dong Xu, Dean Jim ThompsonMichael Jurczyk, Dale Musser, and Joseph Guilliams helped 6 Capstone groups present their senior projects.

Some CS-IAC members also visit the department at other times for events such as “Professor for a Day” (guest lectures) and programming contests. Furthermore, MU’s Comp Sci department consults with CS-IAC members on various issues through emails.

Other CS-IAC Committee Members include representatives from Delta Systems, Microsoft, BoeingCerner, Quilogy, UMB Bank, CarFax, Shelter Insurance, Rose International, Tradebot Systems, and Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

Steve Powell, President of Delta Systems, said that, “Delta is honored to be seated among such prestigious, large, successful companies. We’re certainly the small fish in this group, but feel we have a unique perspective as a small, agile, client-centered web application development firm that is not only headquartered in Mizzou’s backyard, but also employs MU graduates.”

Luxury Captiva Island Beach House Rental Website Goes Live, Real-Time Weather Makes You Envious

April 14, 2010

Delta Systems has built a website to showcase a luxury beach rental home on Captiva Island, Florida.

Visit www.AlmostHeavenCaptiva.com

Almost Heaven Captiva

Enjoy the animated crab that shows you snapshots of the house and the unique treasure map feel of the site.

When a user visits the page, we pull live weather information from Yahoo’s weather RSS feed, and then we parse out the information we want to display.

Once the information is parsed, we compare to a database of images and weather types and then show an appropriate icon for the weather type. We use tango icons, because they have transparent backgrounds and are a higher resolution than the Yahoo images in the feed. This provides a better look and a more site-specific integrated feel to the weather portion of the page.

When Yahoo throws us a wrench, and we don’t have an icon for the weather type, the system immediately sends us an email and are able to go in and associate the appropriate icon for the weather type. We have some defaults in place, but sometimes you just don’t know; for instance, they added ‘Strong Thunderstorms’ and then ‘Wind/Rain’.

We’re waiting for ‘hurricane’ to be added as well.

Delta Participates in Roundtable discussion with Senator Claire McCaskill

April 2, 2010

Senator Claire McCaskill

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill met with a group of small-business owners in Columbia on April 1, 2010 to discuss anything and everything on our minds. While most of the discussions centered around the recently passed health care reform bill, there were several issues brought up about grants, childcare as a barrier to employment, and a call to end the Internet sales tax holiday since it is unfair to local businesses.

Senator McCaskill listened to each and every person’s concerns, occasionally taking notes, providing feedback, and giving direction on where to go for more information – including a few that her office will look into.

Delta Systems was grateful for the opportunity to be heard.
